Shooting peccaries Burgerbibliothek Bern, FA Wyss 125.3, S. These archives also include the four-volume, 841-page leather-bound original handwritten manuscript, with illustrations by one of Wyss’s four sons, Johann Emanuel. The curiously addictive smell of old books contrasts with the clinical “special reading room” of the Bern Burgerbibliothek External link, which houses a wide range of historical archives. The edges of the roughly 200-year-old, 300-page book are fraying, but the quality is generally good the Gothic typeface takes a while to get used to, but the printing is sharp. An instructive book for children and friends of children who live in cities and in the countryside” – was an immediate hit in Switzerland and abroad. The publisher who wrote the preface for the first printed edition from 1812 of Der Schweizerische Robinson certainly knew his target audience.ĭespite these seemingly limiting requirements, Swiss Family Robinson – or to give it its full catchy title, “Swiss Family Robinson or the shipwrecked Swiss preacher and his family. It is not, however, for all children, but only for those who read with some understanding, who have a command of general terms of natural history and geography, and who have been versed in a range of knowledge from the better schools for 8- to 14-year-olds.” “This work is, as the title has said, for children and friends of children. Lara has bucked royal tradition to become a healer she divides her time between nursing the wounded of her own side, and nursing the enemy wounded in the prisoner-of-war camp on the castle grounds. Lara’s half-brother King Xymund is an ineffectual leader, and the enemy surrounds the capital city. A terrifying army of horseback barbarians who call themselves the People of the Plains has invaded. Xylara (or Lara, as everyone calls her, to my relief) is the first-person narrator. Warprize is not deep and it’s not perfect, but it is the most entertaining book I’ve read all year. My expectations sunk lower when I learned that the heroine is named Xylara, princess of the land of Xy – that sounds really cheesy, doesn’t it? However, it was not long before I found myself totally engrossed in this book. I haven’t had the best of luck with Tor’s new Romantic Fantasy line, and when I picked up Warprize, I admit my expectations were low. Such a union and concern of the intellectual powers, such an enlargement and development, such a comprehensiveness, is necessarily a matter of training. When, the, we speak of the communication of Knowledge as being Education, we thereby really imply that that Knowledge is a state or condition of mind and since cultivation of mind is surely worth seeking for its own sake, we are thus brought once more to the conclusion, which the word “Liberal” and the word “Philosophy” have already suggested, that there is a Knowledge, which is desirable, though nothing come of it, as being of itself a treasure, and a sufficient remuneration of years of labor. Knowledge, indeed, when thus exalted into a scientific form, is also power.īut education is a higher word it implies an action upon our mental nature, and the formation of a character it is something individual and permanent, and is commonly spoken of in connection with religion and virtue. Knowledge is called by the name of Science or Philosophy, when it is acted upon, informed, or if I may use a strong figure, impregnated by Reason. |
